The US space force (USSF) released its most recent vision paper on Thursday, showcasing the service’s desire to be the world’s first fully digital service. USSF believes it must be fully digital as technological solutions are needed to accelerate its ability to develop, commission and operate space capabilities quickly to protect US space supremacy. The creation of the US Space Force gives us a generational opportunity to create a service specifically designed for a very unique operating environment. And when you think about our strategic competitors and the threats we currently face, becoming a digital service is more than an opportunity. It is a necessity.

Gen. Raymond also said digitization is critical to service as all of USSF’s mission areas rely heavily on data and analytics. These mission areas are missile warning, weather, domain knowledge, surveillance and position, navigation and synchronization.

The fact that the Space Force is a small branch and that American adversaries such as China and Russia are rapidly developing their space capabilities requires a digitally fluent workforce that can learn, adapt and respond quickly.

The Space Force Office of Technology and Innovation is responsible for leading the digital transformation. The transformation will focus on four areas: engineering, workforce, head office and operations.

“The Space Force is a small, specialized service with a broad mission. It is inherently more tied and driven by technology than any other set of missions, ”said the CTO. Major General Kimberly Crider.

“We must in turn commit to providing them (the gatekeepers) with the knowledge, tools and processes of the digital age that they can use and activate and strengthen their peak performance and limitless potential to advance the way whose space capabilities we design, develop, implement and operate today and into the future, ”added Crider.
